Content is generally created for the eye and from a user perspective the layout and formatting is how this is achieved. This check list addresses the user audience defined as the search engine where layout and formatting is not the criteria and structure becomes the focus. The aim of this hub is to highlight the steps and guidelines in making a webpage visible to search engines, enabling the content to be easily read and the subject matter clearly understood.

DOCUMENT MUST HAVES:

Page URL: If possible the url should contain the main keyword

Page Title: The page title should contain the main keyword

Meta–Tag Page description: The page description should contain your main keywords omitting linked words like the, and, if etc.

Bad Example: The CII is the premier professional organisation for those working in the insurance and financial services industry.

Good Example: CII premier professional organisation supporting financial insurance industry sectors

Meta–Tag Keywords: 3 main keywords should be defined followed my associated keywords. Try to stick to a maximum of 20. The ongoing exercise is to reduce the number of keywords as the page results reflect the keywords that are working.

H1 Tag – Header: Should contain main keyword

Body Text: Main keyword should appear at the starting paragraph and closing paragraph

DOCUMENT SHOULD HAVES:

Links: need description titles with main keywords

Images: alt tags need description titles with main keywords

Bold Text: keywords should be bold to help the search engine establish relevance

Header Tags: Additional header tags should contain keywords where possible

MARKETING ADVANTAGES

Links to Associates: Use links where possible to sites with subject relevance. This helps raise page ranking and helps in reducing the length of time between the search bots next visit.

Link to Internal Pages: supports the search bots journey and creates relevancy in building the website structure

External Links: Try to get high ranking external links to the page to strengthen relevancy and improve ranking not only for the page but also the website.

Most of what I have read elsewhere suggests that "Meta–Tag Keywords" are no longer relevant to search engines. Have I got the wrong idea about this?

Other than that question this is a very useful hub which I will refer to whenever I create a new web page.

it is true that Google no longer look at keywords however there is an estimated 65% of search engines out there (percentage is based on the number of search engines and not their popularity). What we must all remember is that there is no google in SEO i.e. although google dominate more then 90% of the search engine market, we should not forget about the other 10%

Good place to start. I always have doubts about linking to authority sites from my own sites. I always wonder if it gives them more of an advantage than I receive by linking to them.

Any thoughts on this???
